Tyler's Story

From being trapped by what it HAS to look like to trusting his own gifts supporting others on the path to themselves

  • What was your initial motivation for coaching?

"I was just done with the 9 to 5 business life. I felt pulled in many directions and I didn’t know which way to go. I knew that I was over it and that I was not going to be successful in something that I didn’t like.I just knew I wasn’t happy with work and I knew that it was possible to be happy with work."

  • What was holding you back from going out on your own?

    xxx

  • And what do you think was the biggest sticking point we had to overcome?

"Pleasing. I don’t want to admit it, but I think it’s definitely that. The idea of what will people think and that for whatever reasons, my whole like has sort of revolved around the way I perceive myself through the way that I think others perceive me. And on these assumptions that may or may not be correct.I had this notion that I need to please my mom and dad, that I need to please every single person who ever sees an advertisement I might do. I felt like every coaching client has to have that perfect experience and love me, and that was very hard to get over. I’m ultimately held back by wanting to be everything to everyone and please everyone. Which ultimately doesn’t get you anywhere."

  • What was the most impactful session we had?

"The one we called 'Understanding How I Best Connect to Myself and with Others''. I had this narrow definition of what meditation was and that I needed to do it to be a “better person”. And I’ll never forget that once I was at this retreat doing drag and you reflected back to me that “maybe drag was meditation for me”. You helped me see how much being on stage and performing was my way of connecting with other people and to my truest self.I can hold myself back with so much self doubt and self censorship but I realized that if I just go out and do it, I don’t have to make it look perfect. Just be the most present you can be in it and do it because you love it and you’re naturally good at it. As opposed to trying to be something else. And that maybe I didn’t need to learn all that much. I just need to do it. And as I do it, I’ll get better. It’s not about having the perfect this or the perfect that, it’s about people seeing that I’m enjoying myself and having fun. And that is more valuable than trying to look like I’m supposed to be there."

  • What do you feel like you've gained through the coaching process?

"You somehow helped me uncover that I might be a good coach and I had not thought about it in that way. Since I’ve been in recovery and sponsored people in the formal 12 step way, my mind was very limited as to what that would look like. With you, I discovered that I have more to offer than just sponsorship recovery skills and that my background could be so valuable to others. I had just been feeling so stuck and not giving myself a ton of credit for all of the learned experiences I have outside of the 12 step recovery that I can bring to helping people. What I really learned was that I was just being too narrow-minded."

I think that you helped open my mind to the fact that failure is an option and that failure is part of the success. Because you can’t get there without failing because then when you fail, you understand what not to do again. And you get up and try again or try something different or just keep trying.

  • And what was your biggest coaching win?

"The fact that I’m actually doing it. That I got Lumen off the ground. And actually truly truly having confidence and faith that this is what I want to do. I got the website up, I’ve started with a few pro bono clients, and I’m just doing it. This is actually somewhere that I never thought I would even be."

  • Finally, what would your advice be to others who were in your position?

"Trust yourself that you have what it takes to do what you want to do. Because it’s so much more important to be doing the thing that you want to do. If it feels like your calling or you feel like you’re really good at it, don’t compare yourself to other people who might think you are really good at it. Don’t hold yourself up to other people’s standards. As long as you have faith and confidence that you are doing what you want to be doing, that will sell yourself or your product or your service way more than any manufactured marketing campaign or professionally written bio or resume ver will. You don’t have to follow anyone’s path that you may have to seen or things that you think need to happen to make yourself successful. Take a look at those again. Reflect on: “Is that true? Or can I do it right now?” And just get started."
